Gobble, Gobble, Gobble...

From Mrs Davis--Turkey Day approaches...which means everyone is about to buy the requisite 18-22# bird and wrestle it into a foil roasting pan filled with the famous family stuffing--so handy that the recipe keeps getting reprinted every year on the back of the box--and end up with a moist, juicy bird that arrives perfectly cooked at exactly half-time of whatever bowl game happens to be on, not to mention all the brussel sprouts, cranberry jello mold, baked yams and tiny marshmallows, gravy, and mountains of fluffy mashed potatoes.  Whew...I'm exhausted just writing about it.

Still, you just have to love a day truly dedicated to beautiful, wonderful, delicious carbs!  It’s such a great feeling—that brief moment just before everyone digs in—there’s a palpable feeling in the air that makes all the preparation and clean up totally worth it. However, despite all that goodness, I have a sneaking suspicion that all everyone really wants is stuffing and piles of turkey sandwiches.  (Ok…there's the pumpkin pie too.)

Which brings us to the ultimate question to ponder...what to drink with our turkey sandwiches?!!  First consider the components: the Davis Family "Day After" Turkey Sand is built upon a solid base of lightly toasted white bread, slathered with sweet cream butter (one side only), salt and pepper, and fresh mayo (on the remaining side). Thinly sliced white meat is generously layered with an extra dusting of S&P. Crisp iceberg lettuce, ripped in big pieces top the turkey and the sandwich is complete.

As we look to our glass, several options come to mind. What we need is a juicy, mouthwatering white like a Riesling (Check out Seven Hills 2005 Riesling, a steal at $12!). Occasionally a slathering of cranberry sauce--our homemade version infused with orange zest and star anise--becomes our "moist maker." With that tart and tangy addition, I would always head towards a juicy red like a Lemberger--yeah, sounds like a cheese, but its really a grape that originated in Austria. (Check out Yellow Hawk Cellars 2005 Columbia Valley Rosato. It’s a bone dry rose made from Lemberger and another great buy at $10!  While you're buying your rose, if you want a killer dry red to work its magic with turkey, pick up a bottle of the YHC 2003 Sangiovese--dee-lish!)
