Winemaker Dinners around Greater Seattle
Various Dates throughout June, 2010

CRUSH IN SEATTLE - Thursday, June 9, 2010
With winemakers from DaMa Wines, Forgeron Cellars and Gorman Winery, and Chef Jason Wilson of Crush

Forgeron is the French word for blacksmith, but it also refers to experienced artisans and knowledgable craftspeople, such as those you will meet on this inspired evening. Winemaker Marie-Eve Gilla, part owner and winemaker for Forgeron Cellars, crafts complex, food-friendly wines from vineyards chosen for maturity and flavor profile. The women behind DaMa wines, Dawn Kammer and Mary Tuuri Derby, make sure that their wines are the balanced, graceful expression of Washington’s world class terroir. And Chris Gorman of Gorman Winery keeps the quality of his wines high (really high) by keeping the quantities low (under 2,000 cases per year). Pair these dotingly handcrafted wines with Chef Jason’s fresh and unexpected fare, and it could be love at first bite. Jason has quickly gained a big rep for creating one-of-a-kind dishes that showcase the flavors of locally grown and produced ingredients. Let’s just say these artists know what they’re doing.

CANLIS IN SEATTLE - Date TBA
With winemakers from Spring Valley Vineyard and àMaurice Cellars, and Chef Jason Franey of Canlis

After nearly 60 years, Canlis Restaurant is still the Northwest’s landmark destination. Run by the third generation of Canlis family restaurateurs, brothers Brian and Mark, this evening Canlis’ legendary Northwest fare will be paired with wines from some of the most renowned winemaking families in the state, if not the world.

Red Mountain is now the epicenter of our state's Bordeaux blends, and it all started with Tom and Anne-Marie Hedges, who produced their first vintage in 1987 and maintain the largest family-owned winery in the state, Hedges Family Estate. Also on Red Mountain, Col Solare Winery is a partnership between Chateau Ste. Michelle and Marchese Piero Antinori of Tuscany, whose family has produced wine since 1385. Col Solare is a full-bodied, rich, and aromatic red blend. Last but not least, Efestē is the product of not one but three families, who now make incredible Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Riesling.

It’s a good thing that Chef Jason Franey, who joined Canlis last December from Eleven Madison Park in New York, clearly understands and appreciates the family history before him. From the start, he said, "I don't want people to think new chef, new restaurant. I want them to think new chef, more Canlis." The old saying is true: it’s all in the family.

RESTAURANT TBA - Date TBA
With winemakers Efeste Wines, Waters Winery, and Olsen Estates

Efeste’s Ceidleigh Syrah was #36 on Wine Spectator's Top 100 list last year. Made entirely from Red Mountain grapes, it’s a blend of old and new world winemaking, a perfect example of the kind of balance that could only come from winemaker Brennon Leighton, a punk rock rebel turned UC Davis Viticulture and Enology graduate. Another musician, Jamie Brown, winemaker for Waters Winery, credits his love and knowledge of making music for helping him to become an intuitive winemaker. “My goal as a musician and song writer was to anticipate a melody, without restricting its natural direction. The same is true for wine... You learn to appreciate what nature gives you and allow those elements to shape the way you make wines.” Kyle Johnson agrees, “Being able to spend time in the vineyard and create wines that really showcase the fruit is paramount to me.” At Olsen Estates, he has the privilege of working closely with the vineyard manager to craft wines from nineteen different estate varietals. This harmonious dinner is sure to leave your palate singing.
